Gatsby is a great person because he is a goal driven guy who started from the bottom & worked his way up. He had nothing and he was able to create an identity for himself in a world where the wealth and status of one is value-able. Nick is not honest with himself or with other characters
I believe the central message of the Great Gatsby is about letting go of the past, if you don't you’re just gonna end up living in a world of false hope thinking that something will be the same as it was in the past. If Gatsby continued with his life could have lived a wonderful life, but instead he gave up on his future and tried to recreate the past and ended up sad, desperate, and lastly dead. The American Dream is not able to be achieved. Jay Gatsby had worked his way up from nothing to attaining great wealth becoming a socialite, however, having so much wealth & being able to get at anyone else other than Daisy, Gatsby's dream was to have a future with his past love, Daisy.
